Chemists beware: Amazon’s attack on pharmacies has just begun

Online retail giant Amazon is entering the pharmacy business after months of speculation that the company could disrupt how prescription drugs are sold the same way it upended bricks-and-mortar retail.

Amazon announced on Thursday that it would acquire PillPack, an online pharmacy that seeks to simplify medication for people who take multiple drugs, by delivering packets with presorted doses.

Amazon will pay about $US1 billion ($1.35 billion) for the Boston-based company, according to a person familiar with the matter. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2018, according to a statement from the companies.
